3D modeling lets you see all sides of an object, as opposed to a 2D image which is flat and has no 'depth'. All the special effects in movies & most animated video games are created using 3D models which are then integrated into the movie or game content. 3D modeling is also used in Architecture, Medical, Science, Forensics & Food. There are many other uses for 3D modeling like 3D printing.
3D Sketchup is the most basic of all 3D modeling softwares. Want to create more complex 3D models then try Blender. Most 3D models in movies & video games are created using Maya or 3D Max.
