Capacitor as a Timing CIRCUIT

Picture
TASK
1. In the diagram there is one new component, the "Electrolytic Capacitor".
2. Add the capacitor to your 'Terminology and meanings' list. Refer to the "Components List" for the details. Draw the diagram.
3. In the front of your book, write up the new heading and draw the diagram.
4. Write the heading amd draw and label the diagram.

TASK
  1. Pick up the capacitor and identify the longer leg which is the 'anode' the positive side. There will be a negative sign on the capacitor as well.
  2. Capacitors are measured in fractions of a Farad for example 470uF (u-micro 1 millionth of a Farad). The symbols for fractions of measurement are: m - milli (1 thousanth), u - micro (1 millionth), n -nano (1 billionth), p - pico (1 trillionth). Make this table in your book.

DECONSTRUCT THE TRANSISTOR AS A SWITCH CARD-TRONICS CIRCUIT

WARNING: WILL BE USING A HOT SOLDERING IRON. POTENTIAL HAZARD

It is possible to use your last circuit the transistor as a switch circuit for the capacitor as a timing circuit.

Tools Needed
1 x soldering iron

1 x pliers

TASK
Remove the 10K potentiometer and the Light Dependent Resistor components carefully from the 'transistor as a switch circuit. Put the components into your container. You will need to use the soldering iron to heat the solder and pliers to pull the component gently off the circuit board.

CIRCUIT CONSTRUCTION

WARNING: WILL BE USING A HOT SOLDERING IRON. POTENTIAL HAZARD

Materials needed
:
1 x 100uF capacitor
1 x a small piece of cardboard for PTM switch
1 x short length of copper tape

1 x 9v battery

CAPACITOR
Be careful to solder the capacitor with the positive lead towards the red 9V battery terminal and the negative towards the black 0V battery terminal.

PTM SWITCH
Make and attach the switch, remember to solder the connection between the copper tape.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

MULTIMETER
Get a multimeter and measure the voltage in your circuit. Write down the voltages for the different components in your circuit.
  1. Resistors (470 ohm, and 10k ohm)
  2. LEDs
  3. Transistor
  4. Capacitor
  5. Total Voltage from battery

USES
How does a capacitor in the circuit effect the other components? e.g. why does the circuit continue when the PTM has been released?
How could the timing of the flashing be changed?
What sort of circuits might a capacitor be useful in?
